The Corea-McLaughlin Concert Tonight

I wrote a bit about my personal feelings about the Corea-McLaughlin All-Star concert tonight on my other blog, I thought it might be no harm to post some of it here too. At the bottom you'll notice how Corea himself feels about the concert tonight :)

Anyway, the above song is the one that started it all for me and Chick Corea back in 2002. I was flicking through channels on the radio late at night when I landed on some jazz show on LyricFM. They were playing the second part of the Spanish Fantasy suite on the "My Spanish Heart" album. I was so taken with the drum and piano interplay that I text my girlfriend at the time to tell her to tune in and listen too. I made a note of artist and album and bought it on Amazon.co.uk there and then. It has since become one of my most listened to albums and I have bought it as a gift for people I know. I now own two copies myself, having reclaimed the copy I bought for my father before he passed away.

I havent a clue what the "All-Star" lineup are going to play tonight. I wonder if its going to be new stuff... the new stuff caught me out the last time. It sounds like there'll be a fair amount at least, if Corea's own musings about the opening night of the tour are anything to go by, "The music's tricky"...

I'm sorry this place fell by the way side. I had great ambition to begin with, but I think the way the info about acts in this years festival only came in drips and drabs killed it for me. If I had the full lineup day one I could have bust it all out in a weekend of blogging. Ah well, excuses excuses.

As a personal side note, I'm really annoyed with the changing of the Liane Carrol Trio concert from Thursday to Friday night. I know it was done ages back but it totally clashes with the Corea & McLaughlin concert.

The acts just keep coming! There's been a major update to the official page and some dates and locations for concerts are up. Some biographies for the acts are up also. From now on I will just concentrate on putting up videos and music samples for each of the acts rather than including ancillary information about the concerts.

It looks like Jean-Luc Ponty might be performing this year too. While he's not listed in the line-up his biography is included.

Cork Opera House seem to be keeping this hushed up as the concert isn't listed on either the "Concert" or "Festival" sections yet, but you can buy tickets from their "Buy Tickets Now" page which contains a listing of all upcoming acts, which also includes a listing for the Acker Bilk concert.

Every year I seem to miss out on some stellar jazz because I'm not familiar with all the acts that turn up to play over the weekend. This year, I've decided educate myself as best I can and find out about the performers and their music before they turn up to play. I thought some other people might find this process useful for themselves too. I doubt there'll be anything amazing up here, maybe a few youtube videos and some wikipedia entries, but its better than being totally ignorant I guess.

Any suggestions for extra content or alteration of current content will be graciously appreciated, and can be done so by politely adding a comment to the appropriate posting.
